Yellow Diamonds are known as Canary Yellow Diamonds or Canary Diamonds and are the most common form of Colored Diamonds. Within the range of rare colored diamonds (only 1 carat out of every 10,000 carats mined is a natural fancy color diamond), the yellow diamond has gained tremendous popularity with yellow diamond earrings, necklaces and other jewelry being in vogue because of its beautiful shine and its relatively affordable prices.

The intense yellow diamonds come mostly from South Africa. The Intensities go from light yellow to fancy light yellow diamond and to the fancy yellow diamonds and all the way to the beautiful, rare and expensive intense yellow diamond and vivid yellow diamond.

The Tiffany Yellow Diamond

The most popular of the yellow diamonds ever mined is undoubtedly The Tiffany’s Diamond. Discovered in South Africa in 1877, the stone was purchased by New York jeweler Charles Tiffany. His gemologist, George Frederick Kunz, studied the gem for a year before beginning to cut it; reducing it from 287 carats to its current size of 128.54 carats. Kunz added an additional 32 facets to the accepted square antique brilliant cut, bringing the total to ninety. The result is a scintillating cut which returns a great deal of light to the eye. The cutting was carried out in Paris.

It was then mounted by Jean Schlumberger in his famed Bird on the Rock Clip.

The diamond was first shown to the world in 1893 at World's Colombian Exposition in Chicago. The diamond was then displayed at Bejewelled by Tiffany exhibition, at Somerset House in London, in 2006. The gem was also on loan from Tiffany & Co. to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., from April 18, 2007, until September 23, 2007. At the time, Jeffrey E. Post, the museum`s gem curator, said that this was the largest diamond on display in the U.S. The famous Hope Diamond is only 45.5 carats, which is about one-third the mass of the Tiffany Yellow Diamond.

The Tiffany diamond is known to have been worn by only three women during its lifetime. First, it was worn by Mrs. E. Sheldon Whitehouse at the 1957 Tiffany Ball held in Newport, Rhode Island, mounted for the occasion in a necklace of white diamonds.

Designed by Jean Schlumberger, it was set in the Ribbon Rosette yellow diamond necklace, which was worn by Audrey Hepburn in 1961 publicity photographs for Breakfast at Tiffany's.

For the 175th anniversary of Tiffany’s in 2012, the diamond was set in a gorgeous necklace of white diamonds. And finally in 2019, Lady Gaga wore the yellow diamond necklace at the 91st Academy Awards.
